The Gonk is Going Global!

It has been a productive week with educational technology at Algonquin.  Let me share a few projects/activities that have started...

1. The Gonk goes global:I have made connections with teachers from Norway, Sweden, France, Poland, and Taiwan using https://education.skype.com/.  These teachers have classes who want to communicate and collaborate with our students.  Lauren Osepchuk and Paula Bombrun are going to communicate with the french students, Amelia Davis and her new AP human geography class are going to collaborate with  the class from Poland.  I am looking for other teachers from any subject who want to try to do some sort of collaborative project with students from the other countries.  Please let me know if you are interested.

2. Creating online Timelines: Sara Stein has started a great project with her American Lit classes.  They are creating a  Literary Genre timeline using something called Timeline JS.  I had fun with her class today as they started their research and Sara showed them a few examples

3. Brian Calnan shared a great student response system called Plickers with me.  They are really cool! The teacher uses an ipad or phone to scan the students paper clickers and the kids don't need a device.  Visit the website(https://www.plickers.com/) or talk to Brian about how he is using them in his math classes.

A few more items worth mentioning...
  • Jim Polito from Fox news will be Skyping or possibly visiting Maura Morrison and Katie Salt's public speaking class
  • Kim Honey and Renee Moulton's classes are learning about Diigo, which is a "multi-tool for knowledge management".  They are also learning about more effective ways to search for information in Google
  • I had some great discussions with Cam Martin and Lorrie Zanini about their use of the new Google classroom learning management system

Please comment below about going global, timelines, plickers, Diigo, google classroom, or google searches
