Summertime Reflections

I think we all do some sort of reflecting on a daily basis.  In our minds as we drive or exercise or before we fall asleep at night we go over what went well that day and what didn't.

Hopefully this daily review is productive sometimes and helps you to process and to make necessary changes and improvements. Educators know how important reflection is and often ask their students to reflect both formally and informally after learning a new unit or topic. Students can reflect as a group by having a class discussion or maybe student reflection is more personal and comes in the form of a journal entry or a voice recording.  However it is done reflective practice is necessary to for growth.

Summertime is a wonderful time to relax but also a great time to reflect.  In the same way that we ask our students to reflect teachers should do the same both formally and informally.  There are many ways that technology can help educators to reflect.  Teachers can be part of online discussions  about professional practice with other teachers using twitter, Facebook, or by taking online courses and meeting virtually with classmates.  Educators can also reflect by blogging.  As Nicholas Provenzano states in his Edutopia post The Reflective Teacher: Taking a Long Look, 'A blog can be used as a private journal to dump ideas. Some are just for you and not ready for others to see. Setting a blog to private can be a great way to just write ideas, review them, and reflect".  Of course you could also make your blog public and invite comments from others.  Either way the act of blogging forces you to take the time to think and write about about what you are doing and why.  Check out the Primary Professor's

So hopefully as you make your summertime plans you set aside some time to reflect on this past year in the classroom.  I am confident it will be a huge help as you plan and get excited for next the fall!
